How the calculation works
Age is a calendar fact, so it is counted on the calendar: whole years first, then whole months inside the last year, then the leftover days. That is why the answer is three numbers rather than one -- 31 years, 3 months and 17 days is the same span as 11,432 days, but only the first form is the age a form asks for.
The days to the next birthday are worked out separately, by finding the birthday in the current year and, if it has passed, the one in the next. Someone born on 29 February is the awkward case: the calculator takes the nearest real day, and the page says so, because whether that is 28 February or 1 March is a matter of local law.
Common mistakes
- Dividing the total days by 365. Leap years make the average 365.25, so the figure drifts by several days.
- Reading the total days as the age for a form. The form wants years, and often months.
- Assuming 29 February has a fixed birthday. It depends on the country.
When to use it
- Use it to fill a form that asks for age in years and months, or to count down to a birthday.
- The as-of date is editable so you can ask what the age was or will be on another day.
Worked example
15 June 1995 to 2 October 2026: 31 years, 3 months and 17 days, or 11,432 days.
Common questions
Why not just divide the days by 365?
No. Leap years make the average year 365.25 days, so dividing drifts by a few days -- and a form that asks the age wants the exact calendar figure. So the age here is counted on the calendar, year by year and month by month.
What about a 29 February birthday?
The next birthday is taken as that date, or the nearest day in a year without it. Whether a country treats 28 February or 1 March as the birthday varies by law, so check the local rule for a form.
