Formula
How the calculation works
A budget leftover is income minus spending, but the useful half of the answer is the percentage. On a 2,400 budget with 1,975 gone, the 425 that remains matters less than the 82.29% already used, because the percentage is what tells you whether the rest of the month is safe.
The figure scales without changing shape. Double the budget to 4,800 while spending twice as much and the leftover doubles to 850, but the percentage stays the same. That is why two people on very different incomes can compare their spending honestly with this number and not with the cash left over.
The non-obvious property is that the leftover and the percentage move in opposite directions. Spending one more unit lowers the leftover and raises the percentage at the same time, so a small overspend looks calm in money and alarming in percent once the month is nearly over.
Common mistakes
- Reading the leftover as savings. Money not yet spent is not money saved; it is money that still has to cover the remaining days of the month.
- Comparing the cash leftover between two budgets of different sizes, which says more about income than about discipline.
- Forgetting that an overspend flips the leftover negative and pushes the percentage past 100, which is the signal rather than an error.
When to use it
- Use it mid-month to see how much of the budget is already gone and how much room is left before the next payday.
- It is the wrong tool for planning a split between needs, wants and savings; for that use the budget split calculator, which divides income into fixed shares instead of tracking what was spent.
Worked example
A 2,400 budget with 1,975 spent leaves 425, so 82.29% of it is used.
Common questions
What if spending goes over the budget?
The leftover turns negative and the percentage passes 100, which is exactly how much you overspent.
Can I check mid-month?
Yes. Enter what you have spent so far and the percentage tells you how much of the month is already gone.
