Formula
How the calculation works
Cashback is a percentage of what you spend, returned after the purchase rather than taken off it. The percentage is the headline, but the cap is what decides the real figure: once the cap is reached, every extra taka of spending earns nothing.
On the worked example, 5% of a 4,000 purchase would be 200, but a 150 cap cuts it to 150 -- a real 3.75%, not 5%. The cap turns a percentage offer into a flat rebate on any purchase above 3,000, which is why a capped card is better for small spends and worse for large ones.
Common mistakes
- Treating the advertised percentage as the discount. With a cap, the real rate falls as you spend more, so the number on the offer is the best case, not the usual one.
- Spending more to earn more cashback. Past the cap it earns nothing, so the extra spending is just spending.
When to use it
- Use it before a large purchase to see whether the cashback is worth choosing one card over another, and to find where a cap makes the offer flat.
- It is not a tool for a straight discount, which comes off the bill at once; for that use the discount calculator.
Worked example
A 4,000 purchase at 5% cashback capped at 150: cashback 150, you pay 3,850, a real 3.75%.
Common questions
What if there is no cap?
Enter 0 in the cap box. Then the full percentage applies and nothing is trimmed.
Is cashback the same as a discount?
No. A discount lowers the bill at once, cashback comes back later, often next month. The tool assumes you really do get it.
