Formula
How the calculation works
The order of the two operations is the whole point of the tool: the discount comes off the listed price first, and tax is then charged on what is left.
Each step is computed separately and only the final figure is rounded, so the discount and the tax shown on the page add up exactly to the price you pay.
Charging tax first and discounting afterwards gives a different, higher answer, which is why mixing up the order overstates what you owe.
Common mistakes
- Adding the discount percentage and the tax percentage together is wrong, because the tax is charged on the reduced price rather than the original one.
- Assuming the shop shows the tax-inclusive price: in many places the shelf price excludes tax and it is added only at the till.
When to use it
- Use it at a sale when you want to know the real amount to hand over after both the discount and the tax have been applied in the right order.
- Skip it for a single flat discount with no tax, where the plain discount calculator is the simpler and more direct tool.
Worked example
A 1000 item with 20% off then 10% tax is 880.
Common questions
Is tax charged before or after the discount?
In most places tax is charged after the discount, which is why the order matters and this tool follows that order.
Why is my receipt slightly different?
Rounding on each line can shift the total by a small amount, so compare the final figure rather than the line items.
