Formula

dividendYield = (annualDividendPerShare / sharePrice) * 100; annualIncome = annualDividendPerShare * sharesOwned; quarterlyIncome = annualIncome / 4

How the calculation works

Dividend yield compares the cash a company pays each year with the price you must pay today to own one share.

Because it is a ratio, the yield rises when the share price falls even if the dividend itself stays the same, so it reflects both price and payout.

Multiplying the per share dividend by your holding converts the percentage into the actual money that lands in your account each year and quarter.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

A share priced at 58.5 paying 2.4 per share yields 4.1 percent, and 120 shares bring 288 a year, or 72 each quarter.

Dividend yield (%) 4.10
Annual income 288.00
Quarterly income 72.00

Common questions

Does a high dividend yield always mean a good investment?

No, a very high yield often reflects a falling share price or a dividend that may soon be cut.
