Formula
How the calculation works
Each line is the quantity multiplied by the price of that item, and the total is the sum of the three lines.
Doing the arithmetic before leaving the house turns a vague plan into a budget you can actually hold to in the shop.
A buffer of about ten percent is worth adding for items whose price has moved since you last bought them.
Common mistakes
- Entering the price of one item in the quantity box and the quantity in the price box is an easy swap that quietly doubles or halves a line.
- Leaving a line blank is read as zero, so a forgotten item silently drops out of the total rather than warning you.
When to use it
- Use it for a short shopping trip where three baskets of items cover what you plan to buy.
- For a full monthly shop with dozens of items, track the list in a notes app and use this for the three biggest groups.
Worked example
2 at 50, 3 at 20 and 1 at 120 come to 280.
Common questions
How many items can I enter?
This version handles three lines, which covers a quick trip; for a full month, group items into three baskets.
Should I include a buffer?
Yes, adding about ten percent for price changes or forgotten items keeps you inside budget.
