Length Converter: Convert 1 m Between Metric and Imperial Units
Converts a length of 1 metre, or any value you type, from one unit to another by first expressing it in metres and then dividing by the target unit factor, covering metres, kilometres, centimetres, millimetres, miles, yards, feet and inches.

Formula
How the calculation works
The converter multiplies your value by the factor that expresses the chosen source unit in metres, so kilometres, miles, yards, feet and inches all become a single metre figure first.
That intermediate metre value is then divided by the factor of the target unit, which is why turning 1 mile into feet follows 1609.344 divided by 0.3048.
Both the final converted value and the intermediate metres value are returned, so you can see the shared starting point before the second unit is applied.
Common mistakes
- Typing a negative length is rejected with a CalcError, because this converter only accepts zero or positive values.
- Assuming that 1 mile equals exactly 1600 metres adds a small error, since the factor used here is 1609.344 metres.
- Converting in the wrong direction, for example metres to inches instead of inches to metres, gives a surprising number rather than the one you expected.
When to use it
- Convert a running distance of 1 kilometre into miles when you compare it with a race measured in imperial units.
- Turn a furniture measurement given in inches into centimetres before you order a part cut to metric sizes.
Worked example
With value = 1, fromUnit = m and toUnit = km, 1 metre becomes 0.001 kilometres, and the metres field stays 1.
Common questions
What is the difference between converted and metres?
The metres field always holds your value expressed in metres, while converted holds that same length expressed in the toUnit you selected.
Which unit factors does the converter use?
It uses 1000 metres per kilometre, 1609.344 metres per mile, 0.9144 per yard, 0.3048 per foot and 0.0254 per inch.
