Formula
How the calculation works
A cylinder has a fixed price and a fixed weight, so the true per-kilogram cost only appears after dividing the price by the gas it contains.
Piped gas is metered by cubic metre, so its monthly cost is simply the rate multiplied by the volume the household burns.
Subtracting one monthly cost from the other shows the saving, which is the figure that justifies the connection charge and the pipe work.
Common mistakes
- Comparing the cylinder price with the piped bill directly, without first converting the cylinder to a per-kilogram rate.
- Ignoring the one-time cost of a piped gas connection when judging which fuel is cheaper over the long run.
When to use it
- Use it when deciding whether to take a piped gas connection or keep buying LPG cylinders.
- Do not use it for a commercial kitchen, whose consumption and tariff slab differ from a household.
Worked example
A 1450 taka cylinder of 12 kg used at 15 kg a month costs 1812.5 taka, while piped gas at 12.6 taka per cubic metre for 22 cubic metres costs 277.2, a saving of 1535.3 taka.
Common questions
Why convert the cylinder to a per-kilogram rate?
A cylinder is sold at a fixed price for a fixed weight, so only the per-kilogram rate can be compared fairly with a piped bill charged by volume.
