Formula
How the calculation works
The calculator multiplies the quantity of the item you buy each month by the price you pay for one unit.
That product is the monthly spend on that single item, and adding up every item gives the full grocery budget.
Dividing the total by the number of people at home then gives the average grocery cost for each person.
Common mistakes
- Using the price of a packet as the unit price when the quantity is recorded in kilos or litres instead.
- Forgetting items bought less often, such as oil or spices, which still belong in the monthly food budget.
When to use it
- Use it while planning the month's market run so the total stays within the money set aside for food.
- Use it to compare what each member of the household costs in groceries and spot items that push the bill up.
Worked example
45 kg of rice at 70 taka a kilo for a family of 5: monthly total 3150 taka and 630 taka per person.
Common questions
Can I use it for one item at a time?
Yes, it multiplies one item at a time, so repeat it for each grocery line and add the totals to get the full monthly budget.
