How the calculation works
An even split is one division, but the interesting part is the tip and the rounding. Divide 184.50 four ways and you get 46.125, which is not money anyone can hand over. Each person rounds to 46.13, and the group then pays 0.02 more than the exact total, not less.
Adding a fixed tip per person changes the shape of the remainder. A tip of 2.50 each adds exactly 10 to the bill with no rounding at all, so the fractional part stays in the bill share. A tip expressed as a percentage would move the fraction around, which is why the tip calculator and this tool give different remainders for the same bill.
The remainder is small but it is not noise. Rounding each share down leaves the group short of the bill, and someone has to cover the difference; rounding up leaves a few cents over. The honest thing is to state which way the rounding went, so nobody is surprised at the till.
Common mistakes
- Rounding every share down so the group collectively pays less than the bill, then wondering why the card is refused.
- Assuming the shares add up exactly. They usually do not, and the gap is the fraction of a cent multiplied by the number of people.
- Confusing a fixed tip per person with a percentage tip. The two produce different totals and different remainders for the same bill.
When to use it
- Use it when everyone agrees on a flat tip each and you want the per-person figure and the rounding gap in one view.
