Tip and Bill Split Calculator
Works out the tip, the total bill and how much each person pays.

Formula
How the calculation works
The tip is a percentage of the bill, so the first step is to turn the percentage into an amount by multiplying the bill by the rate and dividing by a hundred.
Adding the tip to the bill gives the total the table owes, and dividing that total by the number of people gives an equal share for each.
Doing the division last matters: splitting the bill first and tipping each share afterwards can drift by a few cents because of rounding on every line.
Common mistakes
- Tipping on the post-tax total is the commonest slip, because tax is not a service and most tipping guides calculate on the bill before tax.
- Forgetting that some restaurants already add a service charge means the diners tip twice for the same thing.
When to use it
- Reach for it when a group shares a restaurant bill and everyone wants a fair, equal split including the tip.
- Do not use it when people ordered very different amounts and agreed to pay for their own dishes, because equal splitting is then the wrong model.
Worked example
A 1200 bill with a 10% tip split 4 ways is 1320 total, 330 each.
Common questions
Does the tip go on the bill before or after tax?
Tips are usually calculated on the pre-tax bill, so enter the amount before tax if your receipt lists them separately.
What if people pay different amounts?
This tool splits equally; for unequal shares, calculate each person's portion separately.
