Formula
How the calculation works
Enter the weight as a number, then pick the unit you are converting from and the unit you want the answer in, for example 1 with kg as the source and lb as the target.
The converter first turns your value into kilograms by multiplying by the factor for the source unit, because kilograms are the single base every other unit is defined against.
It then divides those kilograms by the factor of the target unit, so a result of 2.20462 lb means the same mass as exactly 1 kg, and both converted and kilograms are returned together.
Common mistakes
- Mixing up the from and to selectors: 1 kg to lb is about 2.2 lb, while 1 lb to kg is about 0.45 kg, so swapping them changes the answer completely.
- Treating pounds and ounces as metric: 1 lb is 0.45359237 kg and 1 oz is only 0.028349523125 kg, roughly 28 grams, not 100 grams.
- Forgetting that stones are heavy: 1 st equals 6.35029318 kg, so 10 st is about 63.5 kg, which surprises people who expect a small number.
When to use it
- Use it when a recipe, parcel label, or gym plan gives weight in pounds or ounces and you need the metric figure for scales, shipping forms, or nutrition tracking.
- Use it for body weight goals too: convert stones and pounds into kilograms so you can compare against medical charts that only publish metric values.
Worked example
1 kg to lb gives converted 2.20462 and kilograms 1.
Common questions
How many pounds are in a kilogram?
One kilogram equals 2.20462 pounds, because 1 lb is defined as 0.45359237 kg and 1 divided by that factor gives about 2.20462.
Why does the result also include kilograms?
kilograms is the base unit the function converts through, so returning it lets you see the intermediate metric value for any source unit such as an ounce or a stone.
