Formula
How the calculation works
The National Pay Scale fixes a basic salary for each grade, and this tool applies the standard allowances on top of whatever basic you enter.
House rent is set as a percentage of the basic, commonly 50 percent for most grades, and the medical allowance is a fixed monthly amount added unchanged.
Adding the basic, the house rent and the medical allowance gives the gross monthly salary before income tax and other deductions.
Common mistakes
- Entering the grade's minimum basic by hand when your actual basic is higher will understate the gross, so always use the basic printed on your pay slip.
- Some grades use a different house rent percentage, so leaving the default at 50 percent for every case can slightly overstate or understate the allowance.
When to use it
- Use it to check the monthly gross a particular National Pay Scale grade produces before you accept a government posting or transfer.
- Use it when preparing a salary certificate so the house rent and medical components match the pay scale circular.
Worked example
With a basic salary of 20,000 taka, 50 percent house rent and a 1,500 taka medical allowance, the monthly gross is 31,500 taka.
Common questions
Is the house rent allowance always 50 percent?
For most grades it is 50 percent of the basic, but a few grades and special cadres differ, so confirm the rate in the current pay scale circular before relying on the default.
