Formula
How the calculation works
Ideal weight from BMI converts your height into metres, squares that value and multiplies it by a chosen BMI number. The calculator uses a BMI of 22 for the ideal figure.
The same squared height is multiplied by 18.5 and 24.9 to give a healthy lower and upper bound. These two numbers frame the range linked to the normal BMI category.
Because every person carries a different amount of muscle and bone, the three results are a guide rather than a target. Use them alongside a clinician's advice.
Common mistakes
- Treating the ideal figure as a strict target ignores muscle mass, bone density and age, which shift a healthy weight for the same height.
- Switching the height unit without converting it, such as entering feet as centimetres, makes every kilogram result far too large.
- Using the lower bound as a weight to chase can push people below the normal BMI band and into an unhealthy deficit.
When to use it
- Use it to check whether your current weight sits inside the healthy band for your height before setting a fitness or nutrition goal.
- Share the lower and upper figures with a doctor or dietitian so a plan can be tailored to your muscle mass, age and medical history.
Worked example
With a height of 170 cm, m is 1.70 and m squared is 2.89. The ideal result is 63.58 kg, the lower bound is 53.47 kg and the upper bound is 71.96 kg.
Common questions
What BMI value does the ideal result use?
The ideal result uses a BMI of 22, which sits near the middle of the healthy range for most adults.
Is this ideal weight suitable for athletes or pregnant people?
No. Athletes with high muscle mass and pregnant people need different guidance, so treat this as a general reference only.
