Pace Calculator
Convert a run's total distance and time into pace per kilometre and per mile, plus average speed in km/h and mph.

Formula
How the calculation works
Enter the total distance you covered in kilometres and the total time in minutes, and the tool divides time by distance to give the average pace for one kilometre.
It then multiplies that kilometre pace by 1.609344, the number of kilometres in a mile, so you also see the equivalent pace per mile without converting by hand.
Finally, dividing the distance by the time in hours gives speed in kilometres per hour, and dividing that figure by 1.609344 converts it to miles per hour.
Common mistakes
- Mixing units, such as entering a distance in miles while the field clearly asks for kilometres, which quietly makes every pace figure wrong.
- Typing a total time such as 50.5 when you meant 50 minutes 30 seconds, because the field expects minutes and the decimal means 50 and a half minutes.
- Reading the per-mile figure as if it were the per-kilometre pace, then setting training targets that are far too fast or far too slow.
When to use it
- Use it to turn a race result into a training pace, so easy runs and interval sessions are set at believable speeds.
- Use it to compare runs of different distances on one scale, because pace per kilometre and per mile are directly comparable.
Worked example
For a 10 km run finished in 50 minutes, the pace is 5 minutes per kilometre, which equals about 8.047 minutes per mile, with average speeds of 12 km/h and about 7.456 mph.
Common questions
Is the pace the same for every kilometre?
No, it is the average across the whole run, so a fast finish or a slow start will shift individual kilometre splits away from this figure.
Why does my GPS watch show a different pace?
A watch measures distance from satellite fixes that drift under trees or between buildings, so a measured course and a stopwatch often give a steadier pace figure.
