Formula
How the calculation works
Amazon charges the referral fee as a share of the selling price, so raising the price increases that fee in absolute terms as well.
The fulfillment fee depends on size and weight, so a light item and a bulky one at the same price can end with very different profit.
Because fees are fixed per unit, thin margins on low priced items can vanish entirely once returns and storage costs are added.
Common mistakes
- Leaving out inbound shipping, storage or return fees, which are billed separately and can turn a small profit into a loss.
- Using the wrong referral category rate, since some categories charge a lower percentage than the standard fifteen percent.
When to use it
- Use it to screen a product idea before ordering stock, so you reject items that cannot clear the fees.
- Do not use it as a final landed cost, because import duty and freight to the warehouse are not included here.
Worked example
For a 29.99 dollar item with a 15 percent referral fee, a 5.40 dollar fulfillment fee and 9.20 dollars of product cost, the fees are 9.90 dollars, the net profit is 10.89 dollars and the margin is 36.32 percent.
Common questions
Why is the margin lower than the markup?
Margin is measured against the selling price and includes every fee, so it is always lower than a markup calculated on product cost alone.
