Figures are computed on your device; nothing is sent anywhere.

Formula

How the calculation works

The tool reads the systolic and diastolic numbers and places them in one of five bands.

A very high reading is a crisis, then stage two, stage one, elevated, and normal at the bottom.

The higher of the two numbers decides the band, so one high figure is enough to move it up.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

A reading of 132 over 84 falls into Stage 1 hypertension because the upper number is between 130 and 139.

Category Normal

Common questions

Which guideline is used?

The categories follow the American Heart Association ranges, from normal through elevated and two stages to hypertensive crisis.

What if the two numbers disagree?

The higher category wins, so a reading is classified by whichever of the two numbers is in the worse range.
