Formula
How the calculation works
The total cost adds the purchase price of the animal to the feed, medicine, labour and other running costs of the fattening period.
Profit subtracts that total from the sale price, so a positive figure is a gain and a negative one means the batch lost money.
With the sample costs totalling 160,000 taka and a sale at 180,000 taka the profit is 20,000 taka for the cycle.
Common mistakes
- Omitting the purchase cost of the animal makes almost any batch look profitable, because the calf is usually the single largest expense.
- Ignoring feed price rises during a long fattening cycle understates the cost and overstates the profit you finally book.
When to use it
- Use it before buying a calf to check whether the expected sale price leaves a worthwhile margin after all costs.
- Use it at the end of the fattening cycle to record the actual profit and decide whether to repeat the batch.
Worked example
Feed 60,000, medicine 5,000, labour 10,000, purchase 80,000 and other 5,000 taka total 160,000 taka, so a 180,000 taka sale leaves 20,000 taka profit.
Common questions
Is the purchase price of the animal part of the cost?
Yes. The buying price of the calf or bull is normally the largest single cost, so leaving it out would make the profit look far higher than it really is.
