Formula

doseMl = weightKg * mgPerKg / concentrationMgPerMl; cap at adult max

How the calculation works

The calculator multiplies the child's weight in kilograms by the milligrams per kilogram on the label.

It divides that total milligrams by the syrup concentration in milligrams per millilitre to get the dose in millilitres.

The dose is then capped at the adult maximum, so it never exceeds the highest safe single dose.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

A 15 kg child at 10 mg per kg with a 50 mg per ml syrup needs doseMl = 15 x 10 / 50 = 3 ml, which is under the 10 ml adult cap.

Dose (ml) 3.00
Adult maximum (ml) 10.00

Common questions

Why is the syrup dose capped at an adult maximum?

Above the adult maximum, a larger dose adds side effects without extra benefit, so the cap keeps a heavier child within the safe limit.
