Formula
How the calculation works
Enter the cost of the earliest lots you hold and the number of units sold from those lots at the sale price.
The tool matches the sold units to the earliest purchase costs first, following the FIFO method used for capital gains.
It subtracts that matched cost from the sale proceeds to give the gain and applies your tax rate only when the gain is positive.
Common mistakes
- Matching a sale to the cheapest lot instead of the earliest, because FIFO takes the oldest units first whatever their price.
- Charging tax on the whole sale proceeds, since tax applies only to the gain after the cost of the matched lots is deducted.
When to use it
- Use it to work out the gain and tax on a sale before you file your crypto tax return.
- Use it to compare the FIFO result with another cost basis method where the tax rules allow a choice.
Worked example
Buying 1 unit at 100 and another at 150, then selling 1 unit for 200, matches the earliest lot at 100. The gain is 100 and at a 15 percent rate the tax is 15.
Common questions
Why does FIFO matter for crypto tax?
Under FIFO the oldest coins are treated as sold first, so the cost basis and the resulting gain change with the order you bought your units.
