How the calculation works
Every conversion passes through grams, which acts as the common unit. Multiply the amount by the gram value of the unit you have, then divide by the gram value of the unit you want. Two bhori is 23.328 grams, which is 32 ana or about 2.0001 tola. Because the tool only multiplies and divides, converting there and back returns the starting figure.
Bhori and tola are near twins but not equal, and the code keeps them apart: 11.664 grams for the bhori against 11.6638 for the international tola. The gap is 0.0002 grams per unit, invisible on one piece but 0.02 grams across a hundred bhori, which at a high price per gram is real money. Treating the two names as interchangeable is what loses it.
The ana is a sixteenth of a bhori, 0.729 grams, the unit shopkeepers use for small pieces, and one bhori is about 0.375 troy ounce, the link to international bullion. The tool converts weight only: the price per unit, the making charge and the purity, 22 carat against 24, are all separate and none of them follows from the weight.
Common mistakes
- Using bhori and tola as if they were the same word. The code treats them as 11.664 and 11.6638 grams, and the difference grows with quantity.
- Reading the weight as a price. Converting grams into bhori tells you nothing about value until you apply the day's price per unit and the purity.
- Forgetting the making charge and carat. Jewellery is often 22 carat and sold with a workmanship fee, so the metal weight understates what you actually pay.
When to use it
- Use it to put a shop's bhori or ana quote on the same scale as an international per-gram price, or to split a bhori into ana for a small piece.
- It is weight only, so it is the wrong tool for valuing a piece; for the metal value you need the price per gram and the purity, and for the zakat threshold on gold there is a separate calculator.
Worked example
1 bhori of gold is 11.664 grams, or 16 ana. Shops quote per bhori while international prices are per gram.
Common questions
Are bhori and tola the same?
Very close but not identical: the international tola is 11.6638 g. The gap is tiny per unit but shows up in money on large quantities.
