Formula
How the calculation works
A power bill is three charges stacked, not one rate times a number. The energy charge is the units you used multiplied by the tariff. On top of that sits a demand charge, which is fixed by the load you are sanctioned for rather than by how much you used, and a small meter rent. VAT at 5% is then applied to the total of all three, not to the units alone.
That is why two homes with the same reading can get different bills: a higher sanctioned load carries a bigger demand charge even in a month of low use. The calculator returns each part separately so you can lay it beside the printed bill and see which line differs, instead of comparing only the bottom figure.
Common mistakes
- Multiplying units by the rate and stopping there, which always lands below the real bill.
- Entering a slab rate that does not match the bill. The bill prints the rate it actually used; copy that one.
- Forgetting the meter rent on a prepaid connection, where it is deducted before the units are bought.
When to use it
- Reach for it when a bill looks higher than expected and you want to see which line moved.
- It is not a substitute for the distribution company's own figure -- the slab rates change and the bill is the authority.
Worked example
200 units at 8.50, demand 42 and meter rent 40: energy 1,700, VAT 89.10, total 1,871.10.
Common questions
Why not just multiply units by the rate?
No. A demand charge on the sanctioned load and the meter rent are added first, then 5% VAT on the whole. Counting only the units always understates the bill, which is what makes people suspect a faulty meter.
Why is the slab rate not built in?
Because slabs change by company and by season, and the bill usually prints an average rate. Enter the rate your own bill shows and the total will match it.
