Figures are computed on your device; nothing is sent anywhere.

Formula

customsDuty = cifValue * customsDutyPct / 100; regulatoryDuty = cifValue * regulatoryDutyPct / 100; vat = (cifValue + customsDuty + regulatoryDuty) * vatPct / 100; ait = cifValue * aitPct / 100; total = cifValue + customsDuty + regulatoryDuty + vat + ait

How the calculation works

Bangladesh customs charges are stacked rather than parallel: the customs duty and regulatory duty are computed on the CIF value, and then VAT is charged on the CIF value plus those duties.

That stacking is why the effective burden on an import is much higher than the headline customs rate suggests, since a 25 percent duty plus 15 percent VAT can take well over 40 percent of the value.

Advance income tax is collected at the same time as a prepayment against the importer's annual income tax return, so it appears on the assessment notice even though it is later credited.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

Goods worth 100,000 taka CIF with 25 percent customs duty, 3 percent regulatory duty, 15 percent VAT and 5 percent advance income tax cost 159,363.75 taka in total.

Customs duty 25,000.00
Regulatory duty 3,000.00
VAT ৳19,200.00
Advance income tax 5,000.00
Total ৳152,200.00

Common questions

Is VAT charged on the goods value alone?

No. Import VAT is charged on the CIF value plus the customs duty and regulatory duty, so the tax base is larger than the invoice value and the duty itself attracts VAT.
