Formula
How the calculation works
Revenue is the price times the units sold, and the costs stack up: product, shipping, ads, the platform's cut and anything else.
Net profit is revenue minus all those costs, and the margin is that profit as a share of revenue.
Per-unit profit shows whether the business works on every sale, not just in total.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the platform fee, which on many marketplaces is a tenth or more of revenue.
- Judging by total profit alone: a business can look profitable overall while losing money on every unit.
When to use it
- Use it to see whether an online product really makes money after every cost.
- It is not a full P&L; it covers the costs you enter, not fixed overheads.
Worked example
100 units at 500, product cost 200, shipping 50, ads 5000, 10% platform fee and other 2000 gives a net profit of 13000 and a 26% margin.
Common questions
Does it include platform fees?
Yes, the platform fee is charged on total revenue at the rate you enter.
What is per-unit profit?
It is the net profit divided by the units sold, so you see the margin on each sale.
