How the calculation works
Etsy stacks several separate charges, so the transaction fee, payment processing and listing fee must each be counted before you know the real payout.
The transaction fee is a percentage of the whole order value, which is why a large order costs proportionally more in fees than a small one.
Because the payment fee has a fixed component, low value orders lose a bigger share to fees and often need a higher price to stay profitable.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the listing fee entirely, which quietly erodes margin on sellers who list many small items.
- Applying the payment fee once per order when it is charged on the whole order value plus the fixed amount, which changes the true payout.
When to use it
- Use it to set a price that still leaves a target margin after every Etsy charge is deducted.
- Do not use it for offsite ads or currency conversion charges, which Etsy bills separately from the standard fees here.
Worked example
For 3 items at 24.50 dollars with a 6.5 percent transaction fee, a 3 percent payment fee plus 0.25 dollars and a 0.20 dollar listing fee each, the fees are 7.83 dollars and the net payout is 65.67 dollars.
Common questions
Does Etsy charge a listing fee on every order?
The listing fee is charged when an item is listed or renewed, so for a multi-item order it applies once per item rather than once per order.
