Formula

social = gross * socialPct / 100; incomeTax = gross * incomeTaxPct / 100; net = gross - social - incomeTax

How the calculation works

French pay slips separate the gross salary, the net before income tax and the net after income tax, and the figure employees care about is the last one.

Social contributions are charged at source and cover health, pension and unemployment, which is why the gap between gross and net is unusually wide in France.

Income tax is normally withheld at source on the net taxable figure, so the effective rate depends on the household's overall situation rather than on the salary alone.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

On a 36,000 euro salary with 22 percent social contributions and 8 percent income tax the net is 25,200 euro.

Social contributions 7,920.00
Income tax 2,880.00
Net 25,200.00

Common questions

Why is the French gross to net gap so large?

Social contributions alone can take more than a fifth of the salary before income tax, because they fund health, pension and unemployment cover that in many countries is paid by the employer.
