Formula
How the calculation works
The calculator starts from 260 working days a year and subtracts your holidays, sick days and admin days.
Multiplying the remaining billable days by your day rate gives the gross yearly income.
Dividing that yearly figure by twelve shows the average monthly income you can expect.
Common mistakes
- Counting all 260 working days as billable, which ignores holidays, sick leave and the admin time every freelancer needs.
- Setting a day rate from the yearly target without dividing by the real billable days, so the income falls short.
When to use it
- Use it when you set a day rate and want to know whether it really covers your target yearly income.
- Use it to show a client why a higher day rate is needed once holidays, sick leave and admin time are removed.
Worked example
With a day rate of 5000, 12 holidays, 8 sick days and 40 admin days, you bill 200 days and earn 1,000,000 a year, about 83,333 a month.
Common questions
Why are 260 days used as the starting point?
It is roughly the number of weekdays in a year, before holidays, sick leave and admin days are taken out.
