Formula

incomeTax = gross * incomeTaxRate / 100; solidarity = incomeTax * solidarityPct / 100; churchTax = incomeTax * churchTaxPct / 100; socialInsurance = gross * socialInsuranceRate / 100; net = gross - incomeTax - solidarity - churchTax - socialInsurance

How the calculation works

The income tax is the gross salary multiplied by the rate for your tax class, which is why the class matters so much in Germany.

The solidarity surcharge is 5.5 percent of that income tax for most earners, and church tax, where applicable, is also a percentage of the income tax.

Social insurance is charged directly on the gross salary, so a 4,000 euro gross at these rates leaves roughly 2,356 euro net.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

A 4,000 euro gross at a 20 percent tax rate, 5.5 percent solidarity and 20 percent social insurance leaves a net of about 2,356 euro.

Income tax 800.00
Solidarity surcharge 220.00
Church tax 0.00
Social insurance 800.00
Net 2,180.00

Common questions

Is the solidarity surcharge charged on the gross salary?

No. The solidarity surcharge is 5.5 percent of the income tax itself, not of the gross salary, so it is calculated after the income tax is known.
