Formula
How the calculation works
The total cost adds the purchase price of the goats to the feed, medicine, labour and shed costs of the rearing period.
Profit subtracts that total from the sale price, so a positive figure is a gain and a negative one means the batch lost money.
With the sample costs totalling 18,000 taka and a sale at 25,000 taka the profit is 7,000 taka for the cycle.
Common mistakes
- Omitting the shed or housing cost makes any batch look profitable, because shelter is a real fixed expense that recurs each cycle.
- Ignoring feed price rises during a long rearing cycle understates the cost and overstates the profit you finally book.
When to use it
- Use it before buying goats to check whether the expected sale price leaves a worthwhile margin after every cost.
- Use it at the end of a rearing cycle to record the actual profit and decide the size of the next batch.
Worked example
Purchase 8,000, feed 6,000, medicine 1,000, labour 2,000 and shed 1,000 taka total 18,000 taka, so a 25,000 taka sale leaves 7,000 taka profit.
Common questions
Is the goat purchase price part of the cost?
Yes. The buying price of the goats is normally the largest single cost of a rearing cycle, so leaving it out would make the profit look far higher than it really is.
