Formula
How the calculation works
Clicks are impressions times the click-through rate, and the cost is those clicks times the cost per click.
Conversions are clicks times the conversion rate, and dividing cost by conversions gives the cost per conversion.
The cost per conversion is the number that tells you whether the campaign is worth running.
Common mistakes
- Using an average CTR across very different keywords, which hides the good and bad ones.
- Forgetting that a low cost per conversion on a low-value product can still lose money.
When to use it
- Use it to estimate ad cost and the cost of each conversion before scaling a campaign.
- It is not a bidding tool; real costs depend on the auction and the competition.
Worked example
100000 impressions at 2% CTR give 2000 clicks; at 15 per click the cost is 30000, and a 5% conversion rate gives 100 conversions at 300 each.
