Formula

GPA = total grade points ÷ total credits

How the calculation works

A GPA is a weighted average: total grade points divided by total credits. A course worth three credits moves the GPA three times as much as a one-credit course, which is why a weak grade in a heavy subject hurts more than the same grade in a light one.

That is the whole difference between a GPA and a plain average of grades. Averaging the grades directly ignores the weight each course carries, and it tends to flatter a student whose heavy subjects went badly.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

76 grade points over 17 credits: a GPA of 4.47. A heavier credit course moves the GPA more.

GPA 4.47
Total credits 17

Common questions

Why not just average the grades?

No. GPA is total grade points over total credits, weighted by credit. A three-credit course moves it three times as much. A plain average flatters a student who did badly in a heavy subject.

What about the fourth-subject bonus?

The board counts the fourth subject towards GPA by its own rule. To match it here, enter the grade points and credits of the other subjects without the fourth.
