Formula
How the calculation works
The gross is the price times quantity, and the marketplace fee is a percentage of that gross.
Subtracting the fee and any other charges gives the net the seller actually receives.
A high fee percentage can turn an apparently profitable price into a thin or negative net.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting that some marketplaces charge the fee on the full price including shipping.
- Ignoring payment processing fees, which sit on top of the marketplace commission.
When to use it
- Use it to check what you actually take home after a marketplace's cut.
- It is not a tax calculation; income tax on the profit is separate.
Worked example
Selling 10 units at 100 with a 20% fee and 50 of other fees gives a gross of 1000, a fee of 200 and a net of 750.
Common questions
Is the fee on the sale price?
Yes, the platform fee is a percentage of the gross sale value you enter.
Are other fees separate?
Yes, fixed charges such as payment or listing fees are added as a lump sum.
