Formula
How the calculation works
The dose in milligrams is the child's weight times the dose per kilogram.
Dividing by the concentration gives the volume in millilitres, and multiplying by the doses per day gives the daily total.
If that daily total passes the maximum, the result flags it so you can check before giving it.
Common mistakes
- Giving the daily total in one go instead of splitting it into the prescribed doses.
- Using an adult dose for a child, which is what the weight-based formula is there to prevent.
When to use it
- Use it to work out a weight-based dose and see whether the daily total is safe.
- It is not a prescription; always follow the doctor's or pharmacist's instruction.
Worked example
A 20 kg patient at 15 mg per kg with a 50 mg per ml syrup and 3 doses a day gets 300 mg per dose, 6 ml each time and 900 mg daily.
Common questions
Why is weight used instead of age?
Most paediatric doses are set per kilogram of body weight, because children of the same age can differ widely in weight.
What does the daily limit warning mean?
It compares the total for the day with the maximum safe dose, and warns when the plan would go over that limit.
