Formula
How the calculation works
The calculator takes each bill you enter and adds them together to give the total monthly utility cost.
It also compares the six amounts and reports the largest one, which is usually the electricity or internet bill.
Having each item separate makes it easy to see which service to review when the household budget is tight.
Common mistakes
- Leaving out the annual or seasonal charges such as municipal holding tax, which arrive less often but still count.
- Comparing a summer bill with a winter bill, since electricity for fans and air conditioners makes summer months much higher.
When to use it
- Households use it to see how much of the monthly income goes to utility bills before planning other spending.
- Families use it to find the largest bill and target it for savings, for example by reducing electricity use.
Worked example
With electricity 2000, gas 1080, water 300, internet 1200, mobile 500 and other 400 taka, the total monthly utility cost is 5480 taka and the largest single item is electricity at 2000 taka.
Common questions
Why is the gas bill often a fixed amount?
In Bangladesh residential gas for a single burner is charged at a flat monthly rate set by the government, so the bill stays the same each month.
