Formula
How the calculation works
Enter the number of units you are packing and the cost of the box, label and any protective filler for one unit.
Enter the labour cost for the whole packing run, which covers the wages of the people filling and sealing the boxes.
The tool adds the three per-unit material costs, multiplies by the quantity, adds the labour for the total and divides by the quantity for the unit cost.
Common mistakes
- Leaving out labour, which is easy to forget but is often the second biggest part of the packaging bill after the box itself.
- Forgetting breakage and returns, since the cost of replacing damaged parcels belongs in the packaging cost you are measuring.
When to use it
- Use it when setting a selling price so the packaging cost is built in from the start instead of eating into your margin.
- Use it to compare a cheaper box with a better one, since a thicker box costs more but may cut breakage on the way to the customer.
Worked example
For 500 units with a box at 8 Taka, a label at 2 Taka, filler at 1 Taka and labour of 1500 Taka, the material cost is 5500 Taka, the total is 7000 Taka and each unit costs 14 Taka.
Common questions
Should delivery charge be part of the packaging cost?
No, keep delivery separate if the customer pays it, and add it here only when you bear the shipping cost yourself as part of the packed parcel.
