Formula
How the calculation works
The calculator divides the desired number of servings by the original number to get a single scaling factor.
It then multiplies that factor by the amount of the ingredient you entered to give the new quantity.
Because the same factor applies to every item, repeating the step for each ingredient keeps the recipe balanced.
Common mistakes
- Scaling only some ingredients, which throws off the balance of salt, spices and liquid in the finished dish.
- Rounding the factor too early, since small errors multiply across many ingredients and change the final taste.
When to use it
- Use it when cooking for a larger crowd and you want every ingredient raised by the same accurate factor.
- Use it when shrinking a recipe to fewer servings without losing the correct balance of flavours.
Worked example
A 4-serving recipe scaled to 6 servings gives a factor of 1.5, so 250 g of an ingredient becomes 375 g.
Common questions
Does the tool scale every ingredient at once?
It gives the factor and one ingredient each time, and you apply the same factor to every other ingredient for a balanced recipe.
