Formula
How the calculation works
Enter the amount you are sending, the exchange rate offered and the percentage fee plus any fixed charge.
The tool deducts the percentage fee from the amount, converts it at the given rate and then subtracts the fixed fee.
It divides the amount received by the amount sent to show the effective rate you actually achieved after all charges.
Common mistakes
- Comparing only the advertised fee and ignoring the rate, because a poorer rate can cost far more than the fee itself.
- Forgetting the fixed fee charged at the receiving end, since it is deducted after conversion and lowers the amount that arrives.
When to use it
- Use it to compare two remittance channels when one charges a higher fee but offers a better rate.
- Use it to see the real value your family receives before you confirm a transfer.
Worked example
Sending 1,000 units at a rate of 120 with a 1 percent fee and a fixed fee of 2 gives 1,000 x 120 x 0.99 minus 2, which is 118,798 in the receiving country.
Common questions
What is the effective rate in a remittance?
The effective rate is the amount your family receives divided by the amount you sent, so it folds in both the exchange rate and all fees.
