Formula
How the calculation works
The total cost multiplies the paddy weight by the milling rate per kilogram and then adds the drying and transport charges.
Profit subtracts that total from the money the milled rice brings, so a positive figure means the batch paid off.
For 500 kg at 4 taka the milling charge is 2,000 taka, which with 800 taka of drying and transport totals 2,800 taka against a 3,000 taka sale.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the drying charge understates the true cost, because moist paddy needs drying before it can be milled cleanly.
- Treating the rice sale value as profit skips the paddy and milling costs, so the real gain is far smaller than the sale figure.
When to use it
- Use it before taking paddy to the mill so you know the processing cost per batch and the margin you can expect.
- Use it to compare two mills when one charges a lower rate but adds higher drying or transport charges.
Worked example
Milling 500 kg of paddy at 4 taka per kg with 500 taka drying and 300 taka transport costs 2,800 taka, and a 3,000 taka rice sale leaves 200 taka profit.
Common questions
Is the milling rate the same as the paddy price?
No. The milling rate is the charge the mill takes for processing each kilogram, while the paddy price is what the farmer paid to grow or buy the grain itself.
