Formula
How the calculation works
The calculator adds the product cost, delivery charge, COD fee and an expected return loss into a total cost.
It subtracts that total cost from the selling price to reach the profit on a single COD order.
Dividing the profit by the selling price gives the margin percentage for the order.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring the return loss, which quietly eats into profit because a share of COD parcels come back undelivered.
- Forgetting the COD collection fee, so the order looks more profitable than the cash you actually receive.
When to use it
- Use it before pricing a cash on delivery product to confirm the order still earns after all delivery side costs.
- Use it to compare a prepaid price with a COD price and see how much the return risk really costs you.
Worked example
On a 1000 COD order with a product cost of 400, delivery of 60, a COD fee of 20 and a 5 percent return loss, the total cost is 530 and the profit is 470, a 47 percent margin.
Common questions
Why include a return loss in the COD profit?
A portion of COD orders are refused or returned, and each return still costs delivery and handling, so the expected loss must be priced in.
