Formula
How the calculation works
Shopify itself does not take a per-sale commission on most plans, so the real costs come from payment processing, shipping and marketing.
Attributing a slice of ad spend to each order is what turns an apparently healthy price into a realistic profit figure.
Shipping is often the hidden loss maker, because a flat rate charged to buyers rarely covers the actual courier cost on heavy items.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring ad spend and judging the price only on product cost, which makes unprofitable products look fine.
- Forgetting that a discount code reduces the price the payment fee is charged on, so both profit and the fee change.
When to use it
- Use it to decide whether a product can survive a sale event once the discount and ad cost are included.
- Do not use it for subscription apps or theme costs, which are monthly overheads rather than per-order costs.
Worked example
For a 45.50 dollar sale with 18.25 dollars of product cost, 4.75 dollars shipping, a 2.9 percent payment fee and 6.40 dollars of ad spend, the net profit is 14.78 dollars and the margin is 32.48 percent.
Common questions
Should ad spend be counted per order?
Yes, dividing total ad spend by the number of orders gives the true cost of acquiring one sale and keeps the margin honest.
