Upwork Effective Hourly Calculator
Find your real hourly rate on a contract after the platform service fee and any extra hours you actually worked.

Formula
How the calculation works
The calculator multiplies the offer price by the offered hours to get the gross contract value.
It then takes out the platform service fee percentage to reach your net earnings.
Dividing the net earnings by the hours you actually worked gives the effective hourly rate.
Common mistakes
- Judging a contract by its headline price, when extra hours worked quietly cut your effective hourly rate.
- Forgetting the platform service fee, so the expected net earnings come out higher than what you truly receive.
When to use it
- Use it before accepting a fixed price contract to check the hourly rate you really end up with.
- Use it to compare a fixed price job with an hourly job and see which pays more once fees and overruns count.
Worked example
A 500 fixed price contract for 10 hours at a 10 percent fee gives 4500 net, and if you work 14 hours your effective rate is about 321.43 an hour.
Common questions
Why is the effective rate lower than the offer price?
The platform service fee is deducted from the contract value, and working more hours than offered spreads the same net pay over more time.
