Figures are computed on your device; nothing is sent anywhere.

Formula

mode add: vatAmount = amount * vatRatePercent/100, totalAmount = amount + vatAmount; mode remove: netAmount = amount / (1 + vatRatePercent/100), vatAmount = amount - netAmount

How the calculation works

The add mode starts from a net figure a business quotes and puts VAT on top, which is what you use when issuing a fresh invoice.

The remove mode starts from a gross figure a customer sees and works backwards, because the VAT was charged on the net value hidden inside that price.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

On a VAT-inclusive price of 11700 at 15 percent, the net amount is 10173.91, the VAT is 1526.09 and the total stays 11700.

VAT 1,526.09
Net amount 10,173.91
Total amount 11,700.00

Common questions

Why does removing VAT divide instead of subtracting the rate?

When VAT is already inside the price it was charged on the net value, so the net must be recovered by dividing by one plus the rate, not by subtracting the rate from the gross.
