Formula

zScore = (heightCm - WHO median height for age and sex) / WHO standard deviation; percentile = normal cumulative distribution of zScore * 100

How the calculation works

The tool looks up the WHO median height and the standard deviation for the child's exact age in months and sex.

It subtracts the median from the measured height and divides by the standard deviation to get the z-score.

It converts that z-score into a percentile, so 50 means the child is at the middle of the reference group.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

A 24 month old boy 85 cm tall sits close to the WHO median, giving a z-score of about 0 and a percentile near 50.

Percentile 100.00
Z-score 4.83

Common questions

Is a low percentile a sign of a problem?

Not by itself, as a healthy child can sit at any percentile, and what matters is steady growth along the same curve.
