Formula
How the calculation works
Here the fee is taken out of the amount first, so the net amount is what is left after the percentage and fixed charges.
Multiplying the net amount by the exchange rate gives what the recipient receives.
Because the fee is deducted before conversion, a higher fee cuts the received amount twice, once in size and once in the rate applied.
Common mistakes
- Confusing this mode with the sender-pays mode, which gives the recipient the full amount and charges the fee separately.
- Forgetting that the provider's exchange rate already carries a margin, so the effective fee is higher than shown.
When to use it
- Use it when your provider deducts the fee from the amount before converting.
- It is not the same as the sender-pays mode; check which one your provider uses.
Worked example
Sending 500 at a rate of 122.5 with a 1% plus 3 fee leaves 492 after the fee and 60,270 received.
Common questions
What rate does the receiver actually get?
The rate applied after the fee is deducted, which is often lower than the advertised headline rate.
How do I compare two services fairly?
Compare the final received amount, not the headline rate, because fees change the real result.
