How the calculation works
The fee is the percentage of the amount plus any fixed charge, and the total cost adds that fee to what you send.
The recipient gets the full amount times the exchange rate, because the fee is paid by the sender in this mode.
Comparing the fee with the amount shows whether a percentage-based or a fixed-heavy channel is cheaper for this size of transfer.
Common mistakes
- Adding the fee to the amount and then converting, when in this mode the recipient gets the whole amount converted.
- Ignoring the exchange rate margin the provider builds into the rate, which is a hidden cost on top of the stated fee.

Worked example
Sending 1000 at 1.5% plus 2 fixed gives a fee of 17, a total cost of 1017 and 118,500 received at a rate of 118.5.

It depends on the service: some add the fee on top, others deduct it from what the receiver gets.
Why do fixed fees matter for small transfers?
