Formula
How the calculation works
The recommended rent is a chosen share of monthly income, a common guideline being around thirty percent.
Subtracting that rent and other expenses from income shows what is left for savings and everything else.
A negative leftover is a warning that this rent share leaves nothing, so the budget needs another look.
Common mistakes
- Setting the rent share too high and leaving nothing for savings, which the leftover line catches immediately.
- Forgetting utilities, which often ride with rent and can add a large share.
When to use it
- Use it to check a rent you are considering against your income and other costs.
- It is not a lease check; it only applies the share you choose to the income you enter.
Worked example
On 80000 income, a 30% rent limit gives 24000 rent and 26000 left after 30000 other expenses.
Common questions
What rent percentage is safe?
Around 25% to 35% of income is common, lower if you also send money home.
Does it include utilities?
No, put bills into other expenses to see what truly remains.
