Figures are computed on your device; nothing is sent anywhere.

Formula

grossValue = presentValue * (1 + grossReturn/100)^years; netValue = presentValue * (1 + (grossReturn - feeRate)/100)^years; feeDrag = grossValue - netValue

How the calculation works

Enter the amount you are investing today and the gross annual return you expect before any charges are taken out.

Enter the annual fee as a percentage, which covers the fund management charge plus any recurring platform or advisory fee you pay.

The tool compounds the full return for the gross value, compounds the return after the fee for the net value, and subtracts the two to show the fee drag.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

Investing 500000 Taka for 20 years at a 12 percent gross return with a 1.5 percent fee gives a gross value of about 4823143 Taka, a net value of about 3638033 Taka, and a fee drag of about 1185110 Taka.

Gross value 4,823,146.55
Net value ৳3,683,117.42
Fee drag ৳1,140,029.13

Common questions

Is the fee taken off the return or off the whole balance?

The tool treats the fee as reducing the annual return by the fee rate, which is close to how most funds deduct a management charge from the balance each year.
