Formula
How the calculation works
The remaining amount is the goal minus what you have already saved.
Dividing that by the monthly saving gives the months, rounded up because a part-month still needs a full deposit.
If the goal is already met, the months are zero and nothing more needs to be saved for it.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting that the monthly saving can change, so the months are a plan, not a promise.
- Ignoring that the goal itself may rise with inflation over a long period.
When to use it
- Use it to see how long a savings goal will take at your current monthly saving.
- It is not investment advice; it only divides the goal by the monthly figure.
Worked example
A 500000 goal with 50000 saved and 15000 a month takes 30 months to reach.
Common questions
What if my saving changes?
Re-run it with the new monthly amount to see the updated timeline.
Does it count interest?
No, it assumes plain saving, so real growth may be slightly faster.
