Figures are computed on your device; nothing is sent anywhere.

Formula

category = classify(systolic, diastolic): low if systolic < 90 or diastolic < 60; normal if systolic < 120 and diastolic < 80; elevated if systolic 120-129 and diastolic < 80; stage 1 if systolic 130-139 or diastolic 80-89; stage 2 if systolic >= 140 or diastolic >= 90; crisis if systolic >= 180 or diastolic >= 120

How the calculation works

Enter the systolic number, which is the higher figure your monitor shows first when the reading finishes.

Enter the diastolic number, the lower figure, and your pulse if you have it so the log stays complete.

The tool takes the worse of the two categories your numbers fall into and returns that band, because blood pressure is graded by whichever value is higher.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

A reading of 135 over 85 falls into stage 1 hypertension, because the systolic sits in the 130 to 139 range and the diastolic in the 80 to 89 range.

Category Stage 1
Risk level Moderate

Common questions

Does one high reading mean I have hypertension?

No, a single reading is not a diagnosis, and doctors usually confirm with repeated measurements on different days before labelling high blood pressure.
