Formula
How the calculation works
The wall volume is length times height times thickness, and dividing by the volume of one brick plus mortar gives the base brick count.
Wastage is added on top and rounded up, because broken and cut bricks always push the real order above the bare count.
The dry mortar is the wall volume minus the brick volume, inflated for the voids in sand, then split between cement and sand by the mix ratio.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting that wall thickness is entered in millimetres, so a value in metres gives a wall a thousand times too big.
- Skipping wastage: on a real site, five to ten percent of bricks are lost to breakage and cutting.
When to use it
- Use it to order bricks, cement and sand for a wall before the masons start.
- It is not a structural design; load-bearing walls need an engineer's specification.
Worked example
A 10 ft long, 3 ft high, 125 mm thick wall with 1:4 mortar and 5% wastage needs about 1969 bricks, 7 cement bags and 0.92 cubic metres of sand.
Common questions
How many bricks are in one cubic metre of wall?
About 500 standard bricks per cubic metre, because mortar fills the joints between them.
Which mortar ratio should I use?
Use 1:4 for load-bearing walls and 1:5 or 1:6 for lighter partition walls.
